A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley

얼마전 4월 22일 도서관에서 빌린 책들에 대해 글을 올렸는데 미국 대통령에 대한 책 중에서 엘비스 프레슬리(Elvis Presley)가 나왔었어요. 그 책이 미국 대통령이 주요 주제이지만 각 대통령별 역사, 문화, 과학 등 여러 분야를 설명하기 때문에 락 앤 롤의 왕(The King of Rock and Roll) 엘비스 프레슬리도 다뤘던 것이죠. 엘비스 아저씨는 노래로 많은 여성들의 가슴을 떨리게 했지만 영화 배우로도 명성을 날리기도 했었습니다.

아시는 분도 많겠지만, 엘비스 아저씨는 1958~1960년까지 징집으로 미육군 제3 기갑사단(the 3rd Armored Division) 소속으로 독일에서도 근무했고 병장(sergeant)으로 제대했습니다. Armored Division은 한국어로 기갑사단일 것 같아서 제가 임의로 번역했습니다. 미국에서도 징집이 있었는데 2차 세계대전 중에도 징집제였고 이 징집제는 1970년대 베트남 전쟁까지도 이어졌습니다. 엘비스 아저씨가 군대에 가게 된 것에는 스캔들도 연관되어 있긴 한데, 아무튼 엘비스 아저씨의 징집은 미국 역사상 가장 유명한 연예인의 징집이 아니였을까 싶어요.

엘비스 아저씨는 신나면서도 달콤한 노래들을 주로 불렀습니다. 1968년에 발표한 노래 "A Little Less Conversation"도 신나고 달콤한 노래예요. 원래는 1968년 엘비스 아저씨가 주연한 영화 Live a Little, Love a Little에 삽입된 노래라고 합니다. 2002년에 Junkie XL이 현대적 감각에 맞춰 리믹스(JXL version)를 했어요. 이게 전세계적으로 크게 인기를 다시 얻었구요. 그래서 요즘은 대부분 2002년 리믹스 판으로 기억할 겁니다.

 

 

 

 

그런데 이 노래는 가사를 한번 잘 들어 보세요. 연애 중 밀당을 하는 여자에게 밀당은 그만하고 진전을 보이라고 노래하는 것이긴 한데, "A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action Please" 부분은 꼭 현재의 우리들에게 하는 말 같지 않으세요? 원래 노래가사는 그런 것이죠. 사랑하는 사람들의 이야기로 이해하면 그런 것이고, 다른 식으로 이해하면 또 다른 것이고... 듣는 사람이 어떻게 느끼느냐에 달려 있으니까 편한대로 듣고 이해하시면 될 듯 합니다. ^^
